A Model for Climate Resilience Recognised by Interreg North-West Europe

We’re excited to share that the Cool Neighbourhoods project has been showcased as an exemplar by the Joint Secretariat of Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) at their annual event in Dublin, in November 2024! This recognition highlights the innovative strides we’re making to tackle some of the most pressing urban challenges related to climate adaptation, urban greening, and community well-being across North-West Europe.

Cool Neighbourhoods is dedicated to addressing urban heat stress and improving urban liveability. By integrating nature-based solutions and sustainable urban designs, the project is creating safer, greener public spaces that contribute to better air quality, enhanced biodiversity, and stronger social cohesion. Our approach combines local expertise, advanced technology, and active community engagement to achieve long-term climate resilience.

At its core, Cool Neighbourhoods is focused on:

  • Reducing heat stress in dense urban areas through increased greenery and shading.
  • Enhancing biodiversity and incorporating green infrastructure into urban spaces.
  • Building community resilience by involving citizens, especially vulnerable groups, in the planning and development processes.
  • Promoting climate resilience and sustainability across pilot cities and neighbourhoods.

With nine pilot areas across Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and France, Cool Neighbourhoods is more than just a local initiative—it’s a transnational effort that serves as a model for other cities across the NWE region. Our work offers practical, innovative solutions that can be adapted and scaled to different urban contexts, paving the way for cooler, greener, and more resilient cities throughout North-West Europe.

We’d like to extend our thanks to the Interreg NWE Joint Secretariat for their investment and trust in the Cool Neighbourhoods project. We’re proud to be part of this important movement towards creating more liveable urban spaces and look forward to continuing our collaboration with partners across the region to advance climate adaptation and sustainability.
