Empowering Residents to Shape Their Neighbourhood

On 20th March 2025, the community of Edelstenenbuurt in Middelburg came together for an inspiring co-creation session, organised by the Municipality of Middelburg and Except Integrated Sustainability as part of the Cool Neighbourhoods project. Held at Hotel Arneville, the evening focused on tackling heat stress, improving liveability, and reimagining the neighbourhood together.

With residents, municipality representatives, and sustainability experts in the room, the energy was high and the conversations meaningful. At the heart of the session was a simple belief: the best ideas come from the people who live in the neighbourhood every day.

From Local Stories to Creative Solutions

The evening began with presentations outlining the challenges Edelstenenbuurt faces, including excessive paving, lack of shade, and heat-stressed spaces such as playgrounds. Survey results, collected with support from HZ University students, gave voice to residents’ experiences and confirmed the pressing need for change.

Residents then got hands-on during two interactive mapping activities. First, they identified key concerns and ideas by placing notes on large neighbourhood maps. Next, they used cut-outs of trees, green roofs, seating areas, and other climate-friendly solutions to redesign their streets, parks, and open spaces.

Co-Creation in Action

The event showcased what’s possible when residents take the lead. Creative, practical ideas emerged, reflecting not only a desire for greener spaces but also a commitment to climate resilience and improving the quality of life for all.

This collaborative process is far from over. Upcoming activities include:
✅ A second round of surveys in April 2025 to gather fresh insights
✅ Further development of the designs inspired by residents’ ideas
✅ A lively neighbourhood market on 14th May 2025, continuing the community’s journey toward a greener Edelstenenbuurt
