In the heart of Goes, an exciting transformation is underway. As part of the Cool Neighbourhoods project, the city is reimagining the surroundings of its City hall, turning a predominantly paved area into a vibrant Green Hub. By integrating nature-based solutions, the project aims to tackle heat stress, improve biodiversity, and enhance the liveability of the space for employees, residents, businesses, and visitors.
The Starting Point: A Challenging Urban Landscape
At present, the City hall's surroundings are dominated by hard, grey surfaces that contribute to excessive heat retention and lack ecological diversity. With rising temperatures and increasing urbanisation, the need for climate adaptation in city centres has never been greater. However, this challenge also presents an opportunity—to introduce innovative green solutions that can mitigate heat stress while creating a more inviting and sustainable environment.
A Vision for a Greener Goes
The Green Hub pilot will transform this space through the introduction of vertical and horizontal greening, innovative water management systems, and increased vegetation. The project is designed to:
✅ Lower temperatures by using greenery to cool surfaces and provide shade.
✅ Support biodiversity by introducing plant species that enhance urban ecology.
✅ Improve the visual appeal and usability of the area, making it more attractive for visitors and businesses.
✅ Strengthen climate resilience through better water retention and sustainable infrastructure.
Challenges and Opportunities
While the ambition for urban greening is strong, the project must navigate key challenges:
- Technical and Structural Constraints – Implementing green façades and rooftop gardens requires careful planning to ensure compatibility with existing buildings.
- Financial Pressures – Rising costs for materials and maintenance pose long-term funding challenges.
- Stakeholder Engagement – Securing support from businesses, property owners, and residents will be essential for the project’s success.
Despite these obstacles, the Green Hub has the potential to set a new standard for urban climate adaptation, creating a model for other cities in North-West Europe. Strong political backing and increasing awareness of the benefits of urban greening provide momentum for lasting change.
A Collaborative Approach to Resilience
The transformation of Goes’ City hall surroundings is not just about aesthetics—it is about future-proofing the city against climate change. By combining green infrastructure, smart urban planning, and community involvement, this pilot will demonstrate how small-scale interventions can have a significant impact on urban resilience and liveability.
Stay Tuned
As Goes embarks on this journey, the "From Grey to Green" series will follow the transformation from concept to reality. From its current paved landscape to a flourishing Green Hub, this initiative will highlight the power of urban greening to create cooler, healthier, and more liveable cities.
